Will Tesco bring home the bacon?

Miles Griffiths - Tuesday 08.04.08, 05:50am

With Tesco’s results due out today it will be interesting to see if they have much to be cheery about.

There has already been much public debate regarding the less-than-successful US venture - where Tesco has halted planned expansion of its 59 branch Fresh & Easy chain, loosely based on the UK Tesco Express model - but this should not be reflected in UK results.

However, erstwhile limping rivals Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s are on the up and Tesco need to find something to crow about in a market where inflation is starting to bite - hard.

Having had a bad Christmas, this has been reflected in the share price and the withdrawal of an internet clothing venture has not helped analysts feel any better about the brand.

Is it that the success of Tesco’s Lean Model has bred contempt for the market it leads?
