The Women in Enterprise Connecting to Contracts Scheme (WE Connect) was unveiled in the House of Commons last week. The scheme aims to break down the barriers that women in business face in securing contracts with multi national companies.
Research shows that women business owners run 16% of UK companies but account for only 3-5% of corporate and public sector deals.
The new initiative, from the governments Women’s Enterprise Task Force, aims to put female entrepreneurs in contact with key procurement contracts in multi national firms. The idea is based on a US prototype in which multi nationals such as Pfizer, Bank of America and Accenture are already signed up.
One of the first businesses to be certified by WE Connect is Doyle Morris Coaching and Development, its owner Suzanne Doyle-Morris says of the scheme;
“I’m going to get access to corporates at a level that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to at this stage. I’m looking forward to meeting procurement executives within large companies who are happy to deal with smaller businesses.
“It’s pushed me to think bigger than I would have otherwise. To play with the big boys, we need to be thinking bigger ourselves!”
