UK Business:UK Motor Industry scraping by

John Williams - Friday 24.07.09, 14:45pm

Car production for June 2009 was down by 30.2% on the same month last year, but recorded a smaller annual fall than in May which the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) take to be a significant step in the recovery of the industry.

SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everritt took heart from the figures but was pretty optimistic when he suggested; “The UK motor industry is weathering the global recession and beginning the long road to recovery.”

Once again Everitt has called upon the government to help sustain consumer confidence and to ensure that banks are doing everything possible to make credit available to the public to feed the industry.

A total 91,718 cars were manufactured in the UK in June, and 410,710 in the year to date, 50.2 percent fewer than between January and June 2008, the SMMT said.
