The UK governments failure to support workers involved in the ’sit in’ at the Vestas wind turbine company in Newport on the Isle of Wight has ended with the factory bosses winning a possession order against the remaining eleven workers still on site, involved in the protest.
The decision was greeted with boos and jeers by scores of climate change activists and members of the RMT union, who staged a protest outside the court.
The workers have agreed that they will leave the plant quietly as soon as they see the official legal documents, but five other protesters have now started a rooftop protest at another Vestas site in Cowes, Venture Quays. The rooftop protesters have put up banners saying ‘In solidarity with the Vestas workers‘ and ‘Fight for Green Jobs.’
The original protest and resulting 15 day ’sit in’ was made against Vestas proposals to make 625 workers redundant, claiming weak demand for green energy in Northern Europe, despite a rise of 59% in the groups quarterly sales, to 1.11bn euros.
Vestas is the only wind turbine manufacturer in the UK. Shouldn’t the UK government be seen to be doing more to help and promote ‘green ‘energy?
