Energy experts are predicting that weak prices and sagging demand for gas could benefit the UK this winter by using the excess gas supply to fire Britain’s electricity producing plants.
Gas is usually used to produce electricity in the summer months in the UK when demand for heating is low and gas is cheap but Coal fired power becomes a better proposition during the winter months.
But global demand for gas has fallen sharply in 2009, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) production has soared – leading to over supply and a fall in UK gas prices. Experts are predicting that the UK will be very comfortably off for gas this winter, with plenty of cargoes of LNG available and at reasonable prices.
The side benefit of using gas to fire electricity producing power stations is that it produces much less carbon emissions than coal and will help reduce the UK’s carbon footprint.
