Government figures released today say that over 60,000 orders have been placed for new cars in the UK following the introduction of the ‘car scrappage’ scheme announced during the April budget.
The figures cover the period from the budget announcement in April until the 7th June, but the Retail Motor Industry Federation have reported a huge increase in new car enquiries since the introduction of the scheme and are expecting to see a further significant increase in sales over the coming months.
The ‘car scrappage’ scheme gives motorist’s £2000 when they scrap a vehicle to buy a new one. The old vehicle must be at least ten years old to qualify for the discount. The government and car manufacturers contribute £1000 each towards the scheme.
The government has set aside £300m for the scheme, which will run until March 2010 or until the funds run out.
