UK Business: British Jobs for British Workers – strike again

John Williams - Wednesday 20.05.09, 13:58pm

The British jobs for British workers campaign has reared it’s ugly head once again resulting inĀ  staff at Pembrokeshire gas terminal and two oil refineries in North Lincolnshire taking unofficial strike action over the use of foreign labour.

It is understood that there is an agreement in place at the Pembrokeshire gas terminal, between management and unions, to offer jobs to local workers, which says the union, has been breached.

Union official Jason Smith said the ‘wildcat’ strikes had been called after a firm contracted to the site at South Hook insisted on using only foreign labour for a phase of work, a decision that Smith says ‘got everybody’s backs up.’

Hertel UK, the contractor in question said it was unable to source skilled people for the start of the project, as a result the work was sub contracted to a third party which includes foriegn workers among it’s labour force. The same company and workers had previously worked on an earlier phase of the work in 2008.

Talks are ongoing between union and management officials as other plant’s across the UK take similar action in sympathy for their counterparts.
