The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says that postal workers in Scotland, London, central, eastern and south west England will take part in a strike on Friday in protest against cuts and management action at the Royal Mail.
Over 12,000 workers will take part in the one day strike, which will have a significant impact on the areas affected, but particularly in London, where all postal workers will take part in the action.
The CWU General Secretary David Ward says that there are a growing number of union members calling for industrial action in protest at the actions of Royal Mail managers and warns that without a compromise being reached in the dispute it could turn into a national strike.
“There are serious and growing problems in the postal sector which urgently need resolving,” he said. “The current cuts, bullying managers and ever increasing workloads on a shrinking workforce cannot continue. Pressure and stress is at breaking point for postal workers.”
The Royal Mail says that only 10% of it’s 180,000 workforce will be taking part in the strike and over 90% of it’s offices will be unaffected. They also blame the union for the dispute, saying they are trying to halt modernisation to the detriment of customers.
