Plans for super casino in Manchester dropped

John Williams - Friday 29.02.08, 17:54pm

Government plans to create a super casino in Manchester have been dropped , it was announced by Culture secretary Andy Burnham in Parliament this week. Plans for sixteen smaller casinos have however been given the go ahead. Mr Burham said that there was ‘no consensus’ about building the super casino.

Sir Richard Leese leader of the Manchester City Council said that he would be scrutinising the announcement and keeping all options under review.

‘We believe that a regional casino provides the best regeneration benefits for east Manchester and we will continue to pursue this,’ he said.
The news that the sixteen smaller establishments had been given the go ahead was greeted by casino operator Aspers, although chairman  Damien Aspinall believed that the Governments plans to drop the super casino were a ‘missed opportunity’. He said of the smaller establishments;

‘‘We have exciting projects in a significant number of the shortlisted local authority areas.  Our urban entertainment complexes go far beyond the creation of a new casino and will deliver substantial community benefits as well as being popular with customers.’
