The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority [NDA], currently with its hands full shutting off and making safe all but two of the UK’s eighteen nuclear sites, has now fully entered the fray concerning their redevelopment.
In January, Business secretary John Hutton invited the energy industry to propose the future of Nuclear power generation in the UK; apparently “interest in building new nuclear power stations is strong.”
He now welcomes the NDA showing their hand in terms of making clear that disposal of it’s assets will dovetail with his and the industry’s vision for nuclear power.
Lest the locals breath a sigh of relief during decommissioning, they should know this will involve the land, manufacturing at Springfield and any spare fuel material that comes to hand.
It is to be stressed that the Government’s Strategic Siting Assessment still applies before any development consent is given.
Existing sites at Berkeley, Bradwell, Calderhall, Capenhurst, Chapelcross, Dounreay, Dungeness A, Hinckley Point A, Hunterston A, Low level waste repository, Sellafield, Sizewell A, Springfields, Trawsfynydd, Windscale and Winfrith are to be made available.
Interestingly The Scottish Executive oppose any new nuclear developments north of the border in an approach best described as NIMFYIAHTTism [Not In My Front Yard I Already Have The Teeshirt].
Any brownfield sites in your town?
