Japanese car manufacturer, Honda have announced plans to cut production in factories in Japan, Europe and North America. The Saitama factory near Tokyo will cut output by 40,000 cars, and North America will cut another 18,000 says a statement from Japans second largest auto manufacturer.
But the UK factory looks set to make the biggest sacrifice, production at Swindon has already been hit by the global economic crisis facing Honda and with the latest announcement face losing a total of 20% of the factory output.
Having already cut back production of 32,000 cars the UK factory faces a further reduction of 21,000 units. The latest cuts will mean that the Honda factory in Swindon will face a complete shutdown during the months of February and March 2009.
No plans have been made regarding the UK workforce during the factory shutdown, Honda say they are talking to Union bosses to find a solution.
