Curry Restaurants facing staff shortages

John Williams - Monday 18.02.08, 15:11pm

Since the EU expansion and the granting of employment rights to Eastern Europeans arriving in Britain, stricter regulations have been imposed on workers from Commonwealth countries.

The Bangladesh Caterers Association are saying that there is now a shortage of staff in many of the UK’s curry houses, with  27,500 current vacancies in Bangladeshi run restaurants.

Keith Best, chief executive of the Immigration Advisory Service, said the government was wrong to assume that vacancies would be filled by eastern European staff “who have no cultural sensitivity towards or understanding of the curry industry”.

“It is a sad comment on government policy that it favours eastern Europeans over citizens of Commonwealth countries such as Bangladesh whose preceding generations have contributed so much to the British economy and continue to do so,” Best added.
