The BMW UK plant in Oxford that produces the Mini has announced that it will be cutting 850 jobs at the factory as it scales down it’s operations in the face of financial crisis. The factory has held up well compared to bigger problems of the luxury car market, but the little car has never been a cheap to buy vehicle and BMW have decided to protect the remaining work force by cutting production from seven days a week to five.
There were 235,000 cars that left the factory during last year, but sales have slumped by 34.5% in January to just over 10,000 worldwide. In the statement BMW say that, “While the Mini has been weathering the financial downturn, it is not immune from the challenges of the current situation.”
