On a day like today with flood, storm and tempest all about us, it’s a good time to consider
disaster recovery plans
Disaster Recovery Planning, Business Continuity Planning, Business Resumption Planning
- call it what you will, one in five UK businesses have no detailed plans in place with which
to maintain business normality in the event of disaster, be that natural or man-made.
However, findings of research on behalf of BT Global Services also show that the degree of importance given to DRP/BCP/BRP is on the up; 37% of businesses intend to spend more on continuity this year - all the more surprising in the climate of cost containment.
Responsibility for resumption has gone up the chain of command too; in line with tradition 63% of IT Heads have the BCP ticket but now 27% of CEOs are holding the hospital pass.
Emphasis has always been on IT recovery but this needs to shift from something a bit more than just a warm site and backed up servers. Softer issues are coming to the fore, like that of effectively communicating to all staff in a timely fashion such that they can actually work out how to get to a warm site. And not finding out on that fateful day that your business just got spread across three counties.
After all, what if all the other businesses in your previously, pleasantly dry, riverside premises all have contracts with the same BCP supplier at the same warm site?
